Music and Martial Arts Talk at Culture Night in Dublin

“Martial Arts Music:
Drumming Resistance & Community in a Chinese Canadian Kung Fu Club.”

McGuire-ResearchCollage-2000x1000

I’ll be giving a talk about my research as part of Culture Night 2017 in Dublin, Ireland. My presentation uses photos, video, demonstration, and audience participation to explore the intersection of drumming, kung fu, and the lion dance in a Canadian Chinatown. The event is free and is hosted by the Irish Research Council (IRC), who are the ones funding my postdoc. The other presentations in the session also look very interesting, with titles like: “Bodily Sounds on Screen,” “Seeing Textiles,” “The Centre of Everything,” and “En-Gendering Neither (I or Not I).”  If you’ll be in Dublin, I hope to see you there!
